CONSUMERS POWER CUSTOMERS CONTRIBUTE $34,000 FOR FLOOD VICTIMS

JACKSON, Mich., Oct. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- "One person can make a difference." That's the motto that Kathy E. Vitale put into practice when she called Consumers Power Company in July, suggesting that the state's largest combination energy utility do something to encourage customers to support victims of the river flooding in the Great Plains states. As a result of Vitale's suggestion, more than $34,000 has been sent to the Salvation Army for emergency relief assistance to help flood victims.
"Kathy Vitale represents the best of the 'can do' spirit in this country and in our community. We're proud that she lives in our town," said Roseville (Mich.) Mayor Jeanne Riesterer.
Within 10 days after Vitale contacted Consumers Power, the utility listed a special message on its electric and natural gas bills, which are mailed to 2.2 million Michigan households and businesses. Customer and employee contributions were sent directly to the Salvation Army Disaster Relief office in Lansing, Mich., which forwarded the money to areas of need in the greater Midwest.
Total contributions to the special fund amounted to $34,107. Seven hundred and twenty-five people contributed to the fund, for an average donation of approximately $47.
Consumers Power Company, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy Corporation (NYSE: CMS), is Michigan's largest natural gas and electric utility serving 6 million of the state's 9 1/2 million residents in 67 of the 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
