CONSUMERS POWER COMPANY PRESIDENT RECEIVES WESTINGHOUSE GOLD MEDAL

JACKSON, Mich., Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Fred Buckman, president and chief executive officer of Consumers Power Company, has been selected as the 1993 George Westinghouse Gold Medal winner for his extensive contributions to the nuclear industry.
Established in 1952 by the Westinghouse Educational Foundation, the award perpetuates the valued contributions George Westinghouse made to power development.
Buckman was chosen this year's recipient for his "exemplary leadership in support of the nuclear power option in the U.S.; for pioneering vision and tireless energy in championing the development and promotion of the Modular High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor; and for distinguished technical contributions in nuclear fuel performance improvement and reactor analysis methods," said David Belden, executive director of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
The award will be presented at the International Joint Power Generation Conference and Exposition, Oct. 17-22, 1993, at the Westin Crown Center in Kansas City, Mo.
Buckman joined Consumers Power in 1970 after graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering. He held progressively more responsible positions in the utility's nuclear organization including executive director of nuclear activities and executive manager of engineering.
Buckman left the company in 1983 to become president of the Delian Corporation, a Pittsburgh-based consulting firm. He returned to Consumers Power in 1986 as vice president of nuclear operations and in 1987 was elected senior vice president of energy supply, responsible for 60 electric generating units at eight power plants, including two nuclear facilities, and 13 hydroelectric dams. In March 1988 he was named president of the utility and became chief executive officer in December 1991. Buckman is a member of the board of directors of both Consumers Power and CMS Energy Corporation (NYSE: CMS), the utility's holding company.
Consumers Power Company, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy Corporation, is Michigan's largest natural gas and electric utility serving 6 million of the state's 9 1/2 million residents in 67 of the 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
