CONSUMERS POWER CANCELS PSI LINE

JACKSON, Mich., March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumers Power Company announced today that it is canceling its proposal to build an electric transmission line linking its electric system with PSI Energy of Indiana. The 60-mile line would have extended from the company's Battle Creek substation through Calhoun, Branch and St. Joseph counties to the Indiana border. The utility's action follows a decision by Calhoun County Circuit Judge Conrad Sindt on Feb. 19 that prevented condemnation of land along the proposed line's right of way.
"We agreed a year ago that we would stop the project if either the Michigan Public Service Commission or the circuit court ruled against us," said Michael G. Morris, chief operating officer of Consumers Power. "While the MPSC clearly ruled in favor of the line because it would benefit our customers throughout Michigan, we will not challenge Judge Sindt's decision."
"Last year, 32 percent of the power we sold to our customers was purchased from outside sources. This trend is likely to continue into the future and, at some point, we may have no choice but to find new power supplies for our customers and build new transmission lines to deliver the power. However, Consumers Power will not propose new facilities without significant public involvement at the start, as was the case with the PSI line, to ensure a clear understanding of need and support for construction," Morris said.
Consumers Power Company, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy Corporation (NYSE: CMS), is Michigan's largest natural gas and electric utility serving almost 6 million of the state's 9 million residents in 67 of the 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
