CONSUMERS POWER BUYING POWER FROM OWOSSO LANDFILL
JACKSON, Mich., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumers Power Company

today began purchasing electricity from a solid waste landfill in Venice Township, east of Owosso in Shiawassee County. The utility's purchase is consistent with Michigan legislation encouraging development of waste-to-energy projects enacted in 1989.
The facility is operated by Venice Resources Inc. of Owosso. After completing today's test-firing, the plant will provide an estimated 1,000 kilowatts of capacity to Consumers Power, enough to serve approximately 1,200 electric customers.
"Purchase of capacity from this facility makes valuable use of methane gas which otherwise would be wasted. This is an outstanding example of recycling to meet the needs of electric customers," said Paul A. Elbert, senior vice president of energy distribution for Consumers Power.
The Venice Township facility is powered by methane gas produced at the landfill through the decomposition of organic refuse materials. The gas is funneled through a collection system and burned to produce electricity in either of two 1,200 horsepower Caterpillar engines on site.
Consumers Power Company, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy Corporation (NYSE: CMS), is Michigan's largest natural gas and electric utility serving almost 6 million of the state's 9 million residents in 67 of the 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
