CONSUMERS POWER AND THE NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WILL HOLD JOINT PUBLIC MEETING ON SEPT. 9

JACKSON, Mich., Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- A meeting will be conducted by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Consumers Power Company at 1 p.m. Sept. 9, 1993, at the Benton Harbor Holiday Inn to review the results of the utility's repairs to reactor components and nuclear fuel at its Palisades nuclear plant. The meeting is open to the public.
The Sept. 9 meeting follows a public meeting conducted by the NRC on July 20 at the plant to discuss events involving control rod drives and spent fuel that occurred during this summer's refueling outage. Since the July meeting, the utility and the NRC have conducted extensive analyses and reviews of the events. The results of those analyses will be summarized at the Sept. 9 meeting.
Meanwhile, routine inspections not related to outage activities have revealed degradation of neutron absorber material used in the manufacture of some of the plant's spent fuel racks. The presence of the material in the racks allows spent fuel bundles to be spaced closer together in the spent fuel pool. Temporary measures have been taken to ensure that the spent fuel pool continues to perform in accordance with plant technical specifications and NRC regulations. Consumers Power is working with the manufacturer of the racks and the NRC to determine what long-term actions are required.
