CONSUMERS POWER'S GAS COSTS LOWEST IN MICHIGAN

JACKSON, Mich., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- As Michigan heads into cold weather, Consumers Power Company's natural gas customers can be encouraged by the fact they pay the lowest gas costs charged by any of the state's gas distribution utilities.
The current cost of natural gas charged by Consumers Power ranges between 14 to 26 percent less than that charged by other gas utilities in Michigan, according to a new analysis by the Jackson-based utility. Consumers Power's natural gas costs are also among the lowest 25 percent nationwide.
"By maintaining a consistent strategy of purchasing gas through long-term contracts with interstate and Michigan suppliers -- as opposed to relying on the fluctuations in the spot market -- Consumers Power is able to offer the lowest cost gas in Michigan," said Michael G. Morris, chief operating officer for the utility. "Our customers have experienced very steady costs for home heating because we have not relied on the whims of the spot market," noted Morris.
By purchasing the majority of its gas supply through long-term contracts, the cost of gas charged by Consumers Power has only varied by 2 percent throughout 1993. In contrast, the cost of gas charged by other state gas utilities has fluctuated by between 8 to 29 percent this year, according to the analysis.
Consumers Power Company, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy Corporation (NYSE: CMS), is Michigan's largest natural gas and electric utility serving six million of the state's nine and one-half million residents in 67 of the 68 Lower Peninsula counties. It is the nation's seventh-largest gas distribution utility serving 215 cities and villages including suburban Detroit, Bay City, Flint, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Pontiac and Saginaw in 40 of the 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
