CONSUMERS CAN CANCEL ILLEGAL CONTRACTS WITH PITTSBURGH COMPANY
HARRISBURG, Pa., Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Attorney General Ernie Preate Jr. today said Liberty Furnace Co. of Pittsburgh has agreed to notify consumers that they have the right to cancel illegal home-improvement contracts they signed with Liberty.
Liberty, of 700 Ardmore Blvd., will take the action under terms of a "memorandum of understanding" negotiated by Preate's Bureau of Consumer Protection.
"Our investigation determined that a Liberty sales agent had a consumer sign a work order that did not contain the required cancellation notice," Preate said. "The work order was marked with a stamp indicating that the document was a binding contract, not subject to cancellation.
"Under state law, businesses must notify consumers that they have the right to cancel door-to-door sales contracts within three business days if the contract is for more than $25 and was signed in the home."
Although not admitting wrongdoing, Liberty "has advised the bureau that it is desirous of resolving any problems resulting from the use of the improper form as well as working with the bureau to resolve consumer complaints," according to the memorandum.
The agreement, which was negotiated by Deputy Attorney General Margaret M. Stuski of the Bureau of Consumer Protection, was signed for Liberty by its president, Jerry Lebovitz.
