CONSUMERS ADVISED ON SWAN CASTOR OIL

SMYRNA, Tenn., April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Cumberland-Swan, Inc. today advised consumers against using bottles of Swan Castor Oil, 2 Fl. Oz. with Lot No. 30148. Cumberland has concluded that a possibility exists that a very few, and perhaps only the one 2 oz. bottle found, actually contain a two percent solution of Aromatic Ammonia Spirits rather than Castor Oil. No other lot numbers are involved.
The action is being taken because ingestion of Aromatic Ammonia Spirits could cause temporary redness, tenderness, nausea, and vomiting.
Cumberland-Swan, Inc., Smyrna, Tenn., is voluntarily recalling 422 cases of Swan Castor Oil, 2 Fl. Oz. bottles with the Lot No. 30148, distributed after March 5, 1993. The product is sold in grocery, discount, convenience stores and pharmacies in 23 states primarily east of the Mississippi River. States into which the lot was distributed include: Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Consumers with this specific product and lot number are asked to return it to the store where it was purchased for refund or exchange. Anyone with questions concerning this action or requiring additional information should contact Dr. Joseph E. Mitchell at 1-800-486-7926, Ext. 5316 or 1-615-459-8900, Ext. 5316. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is aware of this action.
