CONSUMER REPORTS READERS RANK MEIJER BEST SUPERMARKET IN MIDWEST

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Meijer, Inc. has been rated as the best supermarket chain in the Midwest by Consumer Reports magazine readers in the magazine's September 1993 issue. In terms of competitive pricing, Meijer was named No. 1 in the country. Of the 24 U.S. supermarket chains evaluated by Consumer Reports readers, Meijer ranked fourth overall.
"This is a real thrill for us," said Fred Meijer, chairman of the executive board. "For years, part of the Meijer tradition has be 'Why Pay More?' The rating by Consumer Reports proves that consumers really do value low prices, quality and service. We're glad to know our customers believe we're on the right track. Our goal continues to be putting the customer first."
The ratings for the report were based on responses from 10,000 Consumer Reports readers from the magazine's 1992 Annual Questionnaire. In addition to competitive pricing, readers were asked to rate their primary supermarket based on cleanliness, product variety, quality of meat/poultry, quality of produce, courtesy of employees and checkout speed, among other things. Meijer's overall "satisfaction score" was more than 75 percent.
Meijer, Inc. has 53 stores in Michigan, 28 stores in Ohio and eight under construction in Indiana.
