CONSUMER PRODUCT CO. RELOCATES ITS OPERATIONAL BASE TO LONG BEACH WORLD TRADE CENTER

*. LONG BEACH, Calif., Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- A&H International, the makers of BeeperKid, a child monitoring and locating device, has relocated its headquarters to Long Beach. Moving from its former Honolulu base of operations to the Long Beach World Trade Center, A&H President Andrew Ha comments, "Our product was developed through a technology transfer from a Fortune 150 defense contractor and the proximity to aerospace technology and to a network of suppliers was clearly a deciding factor in our relocation."
In face of the recent and devastating aerospace and defense industry downturns that hit the Southland in terms of industry jobs and bottom- line economic well-being, A&H's choice of Long Beach for its operational base is a boon to the area. Since BeeperKid is a result of technology transfer, the relocation is intended to capitalize on the surplus of skilled, high-tech workers in the Long Beach area. Adds President Ha, "Long Beach is a great environment for fast-growth commercial companies like ours." In terms of new job opportunities for the area, A&H expects to employ 80-90 people by the end of 1994, with projected sales of $8 million-$12 million.
According to Jerry Miller, manager of Economic Development for that city, "Long Beach is fortunate to attract an innovative company like A&H. While others are relying on President Clinton's $19.5 billion technology reinvestment program for support, A&H sought a private market solution."
The company was acquired last June by L.A.-based Quarterdeck Investment Partners Inc., a for-profit public interest merchant banking firm focusing on aerospace/defense conversion and transfer of defense technologies for commercial applications, through its California subsidiary, California Technology Enterprise Corp. (Ctec). Quarterdeck subsequently arranged for its present relocation to Long Beach. Michael Lambert, executive vice president of Quarterdeck who was instrumental in the choice of location, said, "The tremendous base of manpower and technology in Long Beach certainly influenced our decision."
BeeperKid, the Gold winner in Business Week's 1992 Industrial Design Excellence Award, is scheduled to be launched in early 1994. Two successive versions are scheduled for release in the ensuing 18 months. Trade inquiries have already been received from 31 countries and international distribution partners will begin sales abroad within six months after the U.S. launch.
Speaking of BeeperKid, Miller adds, "As the parent of two small children I, for one, am grateful that the technology transfer which occurred at A&H produced such a much-needed consumer device as the BeeperKid."
