CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR THE WEST -- JULY 1993

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The Consumer Price Index for the 13 westernmost states, for July, was unchanged for the second consecutive month according to Sam Hirabayashi, regional commissioner of the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics. Lower food and apparel prices offset moderate increases in other categories of consumer expenditures. The All Items, Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers for the West remained at 146.0 (1982-84 equals 100) in July. Over the year, the Index advanced 2.9 percent -- the smallest 12-month gain since January 1992. So far this year, prices have increased 1.5 percent, considerably less than the 2.1 percent reported for the same period last year. Consumer Price Index data for the region are not seasonally adjusted.
Food and beverages prices dipped a slight 0.1 percent in July but were up 2.7 percent for the year. Grocery prices also declined 0.1 percent during the month as lower prices for fruits and vegetables (down 1.6 percent) and cereals and bakery products (down 0.3 percent) were offset by moderate increases in other grocery items. Over the year fruits and vegetables were up 4.9 percent, while the overall food at home category advanced 3.6 percent. The food away from home index edged up 0.1 percent for the month, and alcoholic beverages prices fell 0.3 percent.
Housing costs rose 0.3 percent in July and gained 2.6 percent for the year. Shelter costs edged up 0.1 percent for the month as lower homeowners' costs and maintenance and repairs prices dampened the 0.7-percent rise in renters' costs. The other renters' cost category, which includes out-of-town lodging, jumped 2.2 percent in July and was largely responsible for this month's rise in the renters' component. The fuel and other utilities index advanced 0.4 percent in July due, primarily, to a 0.8-percent increase in the other utilities and public services sub-index. The cost of household furnishings and operation rose 0.7 percent last month and for the year.
The overall apparel and upkeep index declined 2.4 percent during the month and fell 1.6 percent for the year. Lower prices were reported in July for all apparel items except the other apparel commodities group which includes jewelry and other accessories. This sub-index was up 3.6 percent for the month. The cost of apparel services edged up 0.1 percent in July and posted a 1.1 percent increase for the year.
Transportation costs rose 0.2 percent in July and advanced 2.4 percent for the year. Private transportation costs fell 0.2 percent over the month, primarily due to a 1.0-percent drop in gasoline prices. New vehicles prices edged down 0.1 over the month but were up 2.6 percent over the year. Used cars prices, however, increased 1.4 percent in the month and posted a 8.9-percent gain for the year. Public transportation, which includes airfares, rose 2.9 percent in July and jumped 13.4 percent from year-ago levels.
The medical care index moved up 0.4 percent in July and gained 6.4 percent for the year. Medical care commodities advanced 1.1 percent in July while medical care services rose 0.3 percent. Entertainment costs dropped 0.3 percent during the month and were 1.8 percent above year-ago levels. The miscellaneous other goods and services index increased 0.4 percent over the month and posted a 7.0-percent gain for the year.
