CONSUMER POLICY: MEMBERS APPOINTED TO THREE NEW SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY COMMITTEES.

The 51 scientists appointed to the committees (1) represent a broad range of scientific skills from across Europe and will advice the Commission on all aspects falling into their remit. Given the breadth of subjects the new committees will cover, the Commission has also drawn up a list of scientist experts with specific skills who may be asked to participate in the work of the committees on an ad hoc basis. These appointments were made following a rigorous and open selection procedure. Nearly 300 scientists responded to a notice inviting applications for membership that was published on the Commission's Europa website and in the EU's Official Journal.

The new committees replace the Scientific Committee on Cosmetic Products and Non-Food Products intended for Consumers, the Scientific Committee on Toxicity, Ecotoxicity and the Environment and the Scientific Committee on Medicinal Products and Medical Devices. These committees were created in 1997 along with five scientific committees advising on food safety and animal health issues. The work of these latter committees was taken over by the European Food Safety Authority in May 2003.
