CONSTRUCTION LAWSUITS BY COUNTRY WALK HOMEOWNERS AMENDED TO INCLUDE DAMAGES FOR PAIN AND SUFFERING

MIAMI, Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Class action lawsuits which were filed by homeowners in the South Dade community of Country Walk against the community's two primary developers -- Arvida/JMB Partners and the Weitzer Country Homes -- for damages resulting from shoddy construction in the wake of Hurricane Andrew, have been amended to include damages for pain and suffering.
The lawsuits, which were filed in September 1992, originally sought only damages for evacuation and rebuilding expenses following Hurricane Andrew, which leveled the 1,700-home community in late August. The amended lawsuits also seek additional damages of more than $100,000 per home for the stress and trauma suffered by individuals whose homes collapsed around them during the storm.
"The stress the homeowners were forced to undergo was unbelievable, and only now are we beginning to comprehend the long-term effects of their experiences," said Ervin Gonzalez, a partner in the Miami law firm of Robles & Gonzalez, and the attorney for the plaintiffs. "These people were forced to spend hours huddled together in the dead of night as their homes literally disintegrated around them, and are still suffering from symptoms of trauma and stress."
