CONSOLIDATED STORES CORPORATION REPORTS MARCH RETAIL SALES OF $60.4 MILLION; A 4.1 PERCENT INCREASE

COLUMBUS, Ohio, April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Consolidated Stores Corporation (NYSE: CNS) today reported that for the fiscal month ended March 27, 1993, retail sales totaled a record $60.4 million, a 4.1 percent increase above retail sales of $58.0 million for the 1992 period. Comparable store sales, which were significantly lowered by the unusually late and severe winter storms, for stores open two years at the beginning of the fiscal year, declined 7.7 percent.
Retail sales for the first two months of fiscal 1993 were $115.6 million, a 4.0 percent increase from $111.2 million in the comparable 1992 period. Comparable sales for the two month period declined 8.3 percent.
Commenting on the results, William G. Kelley, chairman, president and chief executive officer stated, "Sales were again significantly behind plan as late winter storms racked many of our markets and continued colder than normal temperatures prevailed until the last week of March. Adjusting for the impact of the two most severe storm days in March alone, our comparable store sales would have declined 6 percent rather than 7.7 percent."
Kelley continued, "Business has returned to the planned levels in April as reflected in the fact that retail sales for the five week period ended April 3, 1993, were $79.5 million, a 8.2 percent increase from the $73.5 million a year earlier, and the decline in comparable sales was 4.2 percent for the five weeks compared to the 7.7 percent for our four week reporting period ended March 27, 1993."
Kelley concluded, "Our stores are well inventoried with the exciting mix of appealing and quality merchandise our customers have demonstrated they desire. We remain optimistic about the balance of the year."
Consolidated Stores Corporation, a leading retailer and wholesaler of close-out merchandise, operated 384 ODD LOTS and BIG LOTS specialty retail stores and 163 ALL FOR ONE single price point retail stores at March 27, 1993.
