CONSOLIDATED PLACES NEW PIPELINES INTO SERVICE
PITTSBURGH, Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Consolidated Natural Gas Company

(NYSE: CNG) has put into service the final portion of a new natural gas pipeline in Virginia, and linked that line directly to its interstate pipeline network.
The project provides access to new gas supplies for business, industrial and residential users of natural gas in the fast-growing corridor from suburban Washington, D.C., to the Norfolk area. It is the largest natural gas project in Virginia in more than 30 years.
Construction was accomplished by two Consolidated subsidiaries: The company's Norfolk-based gas utility subsidiary, Virginia Natural Gas, Inc., began today to move natural gas through 55 miles of new pipeline running from just outside Richmond to Williamsburg, Virginia. This 55-mile segment completes a 135-mile pipeline that begins in northern Virginia's Fauquier County, near Washington. Virginia Natural Gas began operation of the first 80 miles of the line earlier this year.
CNG Transmission Corporation, Consolidated's pipeline subsidiary based in Clarksburg, West Virginia, has placed into service 21 miles of pipeline in northern Virginia. This segment completes a direct link between Virginia Natural Gas's 135-mile intrastate pipeline and an existing Consolidated pipeline; through it, CNG Transmission has contracts to sell and transport up to 225 million cubic feet of natural gas a day. Previously, CNG Transmission had moved natural gas through pipelines owned by other companies to the Virginia intrastate pipeline.
Customers of the Virginia pipeline project include the largest independent power project in the nation, a 650-mega watt plant near Richmond; the City of Richmond's municipal gas utility; and two generating stations of Virginia Power. Eventually, the pipeline will serve customers in eight Virginia counties where natural gas service is now unavailable.
Some construction work remains to be done, including a compressor station near Leesburg, Virginia; compressor station additions near Chambersburg, Waynesburg and Uniontown, Pennsylvania; and 25 miles of pipeline in Greene and Fayette counties in Pennsylvania. Some of these facilities will be jointly owned with Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation; all are expected to be completed in November, in time for the winter heating season.
Consolidated is one of the nation's largest producers, transporters and distributors of natural gas. Its primary marketing areas for natural gas are in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, New York and other states in the Northeast. The company explores for and produces gas and oil throughout the United States and in Canada.
