CONSOLIDATED FREIGHTWAYS PROMOTES GREGORY L. QUESNEL AND MARYLA R. BOONSTOPPEL

 PALO ALTO, Calif., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Consolidated Freightways Inc. (NYSE: CNF) announced that the board of directors has elected Gregory L. Quesnel executive vice president.
 Quesnel, who was previously senior vice president and chief financial officer, retains chief financial officer duties and assumes an expanded role overseeing long-range strategic market development, business planning and technology development. He also becomes responsible for several operating functions, including oversight of worldwide purchasing activities and CF's trailer manufacturing and wholesale parts businesses.
 The board also elected Maryla R. Boonstoppel vice president- corporate secretary and investor relations.
 The appointments were announced by Donald E. Moffitt, president and chief executive officer of the company.
 "I am pleased that the board has recognized the efforts of these two individuals and their respective contributions as key members of our management team," said Moffitt.
 Quesnel, 44, has 18 years of experience in the transportation industry, including positions in corporate finance and planning, administrative operations and accounting for several CF companies.
 He joined the Consolidated Freightways organization in 1975 as director of financial accounting in Portland, Ore. In 1978, he was promoted to director of management and cost accounting. He subsequently advanced through several increasingly responsible financial positions and in 1986 was promoted to the top financial officer of CF Motor Freight, the company's nationwide long-haul trucking subsidiary.
 In 1989, he was elected vice president-accounting for the parent company, and subsequently became vice president and treasurer before being named chief financial officer.
 Quesnel earned a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Oregon and holds a mater's degree in business administration from the University of Portland. He also completed the Columbia University Executive Program in Business Administration.
 Boonstoppel, 46, joined CF as director of investor relations in 1991 and assumed the additional role of corporate secretary in 1992.
 She is responsible for board communications matters, the annual shareholders meeting and corporate governance issues, as well as investor relations and shareholder communications for institutional and individual investors in the company's stock and debt securities.
 Boonstoppel has 22 years of experience in financial communications. She previously worked for McKesson Corp. in San Francisco, where she was director of investor relations. Prior to that, she advanced through securities analysis and financial relations positions at Potlatch Corp., Itel Corp. and Birr, Wilson & Co.
 Boonstoppel holds a bachelor's degree in English and philosophy from Sonoma State University and an M.B.A. in finance from the University of California at Berkeley. She is a member of the board of directors of the National Investor Relations Institute.
