CONSILIUM ANNOUNCES PRELIMINARY FOURTH QUARTER EARNINGS

CONSILIUM ANNOUNCES PRELIMINARY FOURTH QUARTER EARNINGS
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Consilium Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIM), the leading supplier of integrated plant floor management software and services, announced today that continued software order delays will result in fourth quarter revenues and earnings below third quarter 1991 levels. The company expects to be profitable and was cash flow positive for the fourth quarter, ended Oct. 31, 1991. Final results for the quarter will be released on Dec. 5, 1991.
"As we have stressed throughout the year, continuing uncertainty about the domestic economy is prolonging sales cycles and delaying purchasing decisions for major manufacturing systems," said Thomas Tomasetti, Consilium's president and chief executive officer. "Decisions by several potential customers to defer purchasing decisions on major systems in the fourth quarter will result in earnings per share in the 5 to 9 cent range."
The company remains in a strong and competitive position. Although potential customers have remained hesitant to finalize contracts as the period of recession lengthens, the company has had a greater amount of potential business in the pipeline this quarter than ever before. Over 40 percent of revenues come from recurring sources, such as maintenance and long-term consulting contracts, which are not affected by the recession. The company has a strong cash position and is carefully managing discretionary spending.
"We have built on the company's fundamental strengths throughout this year, as we have taken steps to reduce the length of our sales cycles and to increase our distribution channels," said Tomasetti. "Preliminary reception of our new FlowStream product has been very positive, and indicates strong market demand for the product in the future.
"Once the economy recovers, we are well positioned to enjoy excellent growth. In the meantime, we are confident that our experienced executive team can successfully manage any situation we might face," he concluded.
