CONSILIUM ANNOUNCES NEXT GENERATION OF ITS SOFTWARE
FOR PROCESS MANUFACTURING; FLOWSTREAM VERSION 2.0 ANNOUNCED
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Consilium Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIM), the leading supplier of manufacturing execution systems (MES) software and services, announced today the next generation of its FlowStream software. The new release, version 2.0 incorporates a number of new features to meet the specific needs of process manufacturers, including those in the pharmaceutical, chemical and consumer packaged goods industries.
"Process manufacturers today must meet strict quality, environmental and regulatory standards, in addition to customer requirements, in order to be globally competitive," said Dr. Jonathan Golovin, chairman of Consilium. "This newest FlowStream release contains critical features to support the regulatory requirements of process manufacturers, while offering flexibility to model the unique environment of each individual research facility or plant." Offering Many New Features
The new features in FlowStream version 2.0 include the following:
 -- Process Management -- including non-linear flow and by-products
 -- Batch or Procedure Execution
-- Materials Management and Inventory Tracking -- including
 dispensing
-- Quality Management -- including sample tracking, statistical
quality control (SQC) and specifications (SPC)
 -- Document and Specifications Management
 -- Equipment Allocation and Tracking
 -- Labor Allocation and Tracking
 -- Rule-based Batch Dispatching
 -- Management Reports and Inquiries
With the new features, process manufacturers can track received materials through dispensing to a batch, track work-in-process, capture batch record information, display necessary processing instructions to operators, maintain complete equipment logs from production and sanitation services, manage batch doctoring in chemical processes, and link automated equipment with manual operations.
FlowStream version 2.0 now provides an automation gateway to Digital Equipment Corp.'s BASEstar product. BASEstar offers general purpose productivity tools for integrating automation control with the plant and dispatch management environment. BASEstar is one of the cornerstones of Digital's Network Application Systems (NAS) environment for manufacturing.
It includes interfaces to a wide array of programmable logic controllers (PLC) so manufacturers will be able to take advantage of "plug and play" benefits.
The new release of FlowStream provides a convenient and effective method for supporting compliance with regulatory requirements common to pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing, including reporting operator exposure and equipment and labor qualification to OSHA, providing batch history reports to the FDA and reporting waste and emissions to the EPA.
FlowStream version 2.0 allows process manufacturers to maintain complete history and genealogy of raw materials, intermediates, by- and co-products, and finished products, as well as complete histories of equipment, direct labor, and quality samples. FlowStream also provides chemical manufacturers with the ability to track in batches and campaigns. Technology for the '90s
FlowStream uses the technology of the '90s as the foundation for its powerful application. The software incorporates true client-server architecture, object-oriented programming in C++, an SQL-compliant relational database, and uses OSF/Motif Window Manager for its graphical user environment.
FlowStream's client-server architecture simplifies the process of implementing the software. The computing load can be leveraged against existing hardware and PCs and Macs can be used to display FlowStream.
FlowStream version 2.0 has tools designed specifically for operators, supervisors and managers, schedulers, and finance and quality personnel. Its core functionality includes process definition, equipment and labor tracking, scheduling, quality management and execution control.
"Feedback from our initial customers and prospects indicates that plant personnel are finding the job-specific user interface easy to use," said Golovin. "FlowStream's graphical approach has allowed users to quickly build pilot applications -- some in as little as two weeks."
