CONRAIL OFFERS 'LIVE LIFTS' OF IMPORT CONTAINERS IN BOSTON
PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Consolidated Rail Corporation (NYSE: CRR) (Conrail) will provide "live lifts" of import containers at Boston starting Aug. 10, reducing trucking costs and eliminating up to 100 one-way truck trips a week over crowded local roads between the piers and Conrail's Beacon Park intermodal terminal.
The service will be available Monday through Friday, noon to 6 p.m., for Atlantic import containers arriving from one of the Port of Boston's marine terminals and moving by rail without chassis from Beacon Park to Chicago.
A "live lift" is the direct transfer of a container between a chassis and a rail car.
Containers are placed on chassis at the marine terminal and trucked to the rail intermodal terminal. Without a "live lift," when a container arrives at the intermodal terminal it is stored, still on a chassis, until lifted onto a rail car. The truck tractor returns later to pick up the empty chassis. By directly transferring the container from chassis upon arrival, the number of one-way truck trips required to position import containers and chassis is reduced to two from four.
Conrail operates a rail-freight transportation network in 14 Northeastern and Midwestern states, the District of Columbia, and the Province of Quebec.
