 CONRAIL NAMES GATES, BEARD TO NEW OPERATIONS POSTS
 PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Consolidated Rail Corporation


(NYSE: CRR) (Conrail) has named Gerald T. Gates to the newly created position of assistant vice president-Operations Planning and Administration.
 James R. Beard succeeds Gates as general manager-Transportation and Customer Service, Indianapolis Division. David M. LeVan, senior vice president-Operations, announced the appointments.
 In his new position, Gates will help shape Operations Department management processes, including employee development, training, and placement; performance management, safety, capital planning, operations planning, and budgeting. Gates joined Conrail after receiving his bachelor of science in civil engineering from Bucknell in 1976, and has served in various transportation and engineering capacities, including assistant general manager at Albany and division superintendent at Buffalo.
 Beard will direct train service for customers on Conrail's Indianapolis Division, which includes rail lines in central and southern Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, and to Charleston, W.Va. Beard, who began his railroad career in 1961 with the New York Central, has served Conrail in various engineering and operating posts, including assistant general manager of the Philadelphia Division and chief regional engineer at both Philadelphia and Indianapolis. He received a bachelor of arts in history from Michigan State University in 1965.
 Conrail operates a rail-freight transportation network in 14 Northeastern and Midwestern states, the District of Columbia, and the Province of Quebec.
