CONRAIL INVESTING $21 MILLION TO ADD 303 COILSHIELD CARS TO FLEET

PHILADELPHIA, June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Consolidated Rail Corporation (NYSE: CRR) (Conrail) will add 303 CoilSHIELD cars to its fleet to serve customers who supply sheet steel to automobile and appliance manufacturers.
The $21 million investment will expand Conrail's CoilSHIELD fleet to 441 cars. Production of the new cars will begin this summer with deliveries scheduled to be completed in the fall.
The company cited market share gains, increasing demand for rail transportation by steel shippers and its promise of quality transportation services to its shippers, as the reasons for the fleet expansion.
In the fall of 1992 Conrail became the first railroad to use the advanced design car when it placed 138 CoilSHIELD units into service. The car, the product of a two-year joint development effort by Inland Steel Flat Products of Chicago, Thrall Car Manufacturing Company of Chicago Heights, Illinois, and Conrail, offers improved damage prevention for coil steel shipments and more efficient unloading and loading operations.
The fully insulated cars provide greater protection for coils through the use of wood-lined transverse troughs. A smoother ride is guaranteed by a low center of gravity and premium trucks.
The new cars can be loaded and unloaded more easily because restraining arms have been removed. They can accommodate wider and heavier coils -- up to 72 inches in width and up to 60,000 pounds in weight. Shipments of up to 216,500 pounds per car can be handled in selected lanes.
Conrail's Hollidaysburg Car Shop, near Altoona, Pa., will build 203 of the new cars, with the remaining 100 cars to be built by Thrall.
"Our shippers have benefited greatly from this new car type," said Michael Yeager, Conrail's market manager for sheet steel. "We asked our shippers what kinds of improvements they would like to see in this fleet and incorporated many of those ideas into the design. Since the initial fleet went into service, our shippers have told us that our service not only meets, but frequently exceeds, their expectations."
The addition of these cars is another example of Conrail's dedication to quality service to the steel industry. Conrail's SteelTRAIN service offers overnight transit from Chicago area mills to Michigan steel users. The company's affiliated SteelNET centers provide just-in-time and local warehousing and distribution services combining the advantages of long-haul rail transport and the flexibility of local truck delivery.
Conrail operates a rail-freight transportation network in 14 Northeastern and Midwestern states, the District of Columbia, and the Province of Quebec.
