CONRAIL CHAIRMAN HAGEN PRAISES GOV. CASEY'S SUPPORT
OF PENNSYLVANIA DOUBLE-STACK RAIL FREIGHT IMPROVEMENTS
PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Gov. Robert P. Casey's commitment to assist railroads in financing improvements to accommodate double-stack containers was applauded today by James A. Hagen, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Consolidated Rail Corporation (NYSE: CRR).
"Governor Casey's commitment of state financial support for double- stack is another example of his long-term vision and strong leadership on transportation issues," said Hagen. "By supporting funding for these improvements, Governor Casey will help create much needed new jobs in construction, as early as next spring. The double-stack clearance route across Pennsylvania will also lead to increases in transportation and distribution jobs.
"Conrail's double-stack route from western Pennsylvania through Pittsburgh, Johnstown, Altoona, and Harrisburg to Reading, Pa., and the rest of eastern Pennsylvania will link markets within the commonwealth, and help Pennsylvania business compete in regional, national and world markets. Our east-west double-stack route will also serve as a land- bridge between West Coast ports and the Port of Philadelphia. The availability of double-stack service will also act as an economic development tool for communities located along the route," said Hagen.
In addition to the state's investment, Conrail will invest more than $39 million of its own funds to achieve double-stack clearance on in Pennsylvania. In addition, Conrail will provide all of the $3.1 million necessary to connect its Pennsylvania double-stack route with lines to the west at Cleveland.
