CONRAIL BEGINS DETAILED DESIGN WORK ON ROCKWOOD, MICH. GRADE CROSSING IMPROVEMENTS

PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Consolidated Rail Corporation (NYSE: CRR) (Conrail) has started detailed design work for improvements to the highway traffic control signals at the North Huron River Drive grade crossing near Fort Street in Rockwood, Mich.
Conrail was able to initiate the design work following the Feb. 16 approval of this project by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Construction is expected to begin in late spring and the new signals put into operation by mid-summer. When completed, gates will be installed across the width of North Huron River Drive and flashing lights mounted on 22-foot cantilevers. The activation of the lights, flashers and bells will be controlled by motion predictors which provide a consistent length of time before a train reaches the crossing, whether it is approaching at 10 mph or 50 mph.
In addition to designing the improvements, other work necessary to complete the project includes ordering materials from outside suppliers, preparing foundations on-site, building and wiring the enclosures for the electronic components, and, at the very end of the project, the field installation of the control devices, gates and flashers.
Conrail operates a rail freight network in 14 Northeastern and Midwestern states, the District of Columbia, and the Province of Quebec.
