CONRAIL AWARDS CONTRACT TO AT&T

PHILADELPHIA, April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Consolidated Rail Corporation (NYSE: CRR) (Conrail) has selected AT&T (NYSE: Tr?ovide a telephone-network-based service that streamlines the process of notifying crews about the status of their next assignment in Conrail's freight rail operations.
Using AT&T InfoWorx(R) Interactive Voice Service, Conrail's train crew members dial a toll-free 800 number to be connected immediately to a computer-assisted crew dispatch application on Conrail's computer. A crew member uses a touch-tone phone to respond to a series of voice prompts to determine his/her position on the listing of available workers.
The service is made possible with AT&T 800 Service and AT&T's InfoWorx Service, a network-based voice-response system, that is connected to the Conrail data center here. Crew members can retrieve their scheduling information 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
"Conrail has a corporate commitment to quality in all aspects of our business," said Rick Pyson, vice president-Transportation at Conrail.
"The previous method of providing this information to our train and engine employees was brought up as a problem by a Conrail labor- management group," he said. "Our new AT&T system will provide ease of use, reliability and increased capacity to improve our employees' work environment as well as their quality of life."
"Conrail now has a turnkey solution that can grow with the company's needs," said Phil Johnson, AT&T InfoWorx general manager. "Since the service is based in AT&T's network, Conrail avoids the capital outlay required to maintain its own system."
Conrail operates a rail-freight-service network in 14 Northeastern and Midwestern states, the District of Columbia and the Province of Quebec.
