CONRAIL AND NORFOLK SOUTHERN EXPAND

NORFOLK, Va., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Conrail (NYSE: CRR) and Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC) will inaugurate new intermodal service between New England and the Southeast on November 1. By establishing a new train between Columbus and Cincinnati, third-morning service will be available for the first time between New England and upstate New York and the Southeast. The new trains will also speed up existing intermodal service between Buffalo, Cleveland and Columbus and the South.
The new trains will connect with existing Conrail and Norfolk Southern intermodal service at Columbus, Ohio, and with new Norfolk Southern intermodal trains at Cincinnati. Additionally, Conrail will be able to offer direct intermodal service to Cincinnati by using Norfolk Southern's terminal there.
The two railroads will share assets to offer the improved service. The train will use Norfolk Southern equipment operated by Conrail crews over Conrail tracks. It will relieve pressure on an otherwise crowded Norfolk Southern line to the west, while making use of surplus capacity on Conrail's Columbus-Cincinnati route. And by using NS's intermodal terminal at Cincinnati, Conrail gains direct access to the market.
"This is part of our ongoing efforts to improve intermodal service east of the Mississippi," said James A. Hagen, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Conrail. "While railroads have scored impressive competitive gains in longer haul markets, a huge potential also exists in shorter hauls. New services like this one will allow railroads to serve short-haul markets better."
"We must improve service to our customers, yet use our assets wisely," stated David Goode, Norfolk Southern's chairman, president and chief executive officer. "This is the kind of breakthrough that can boost both goals when railroads find ways to work together. It's a very exciting development and we will continue to seek more opportunities like this."
This is the fourth recent example of new intermodal services implemented jointly by Conrail and Norfolk Southern. They also jointly operate the "Atlanta Flyer" intermodal train between the New York area and Atlanta. In the spring of 1993, Triple Crown began offering RoadRailer and container service between the Northeast and Chicago, and between the Northeast and Atlanta, over NS and Conrail lines. Triple Crown is a retail intermodal partnership owned jointly by Norfolk Southern and Conrail.
