CONRAIL AND C.W.S. ANNOUNCE 'STEELINK'
PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Consolidated Rail Corporation (NYSE: CRR) (Conrail) and C.W.S., Inc., a Chicago-based company specializing in handling and shipping steel, today announced the formation of SteeLINK, a joint venture providing 48-hour door-to-door intermodal steel service between Philadelphia and Chicago. This truck-competitive service is the first of its type on the East Coast, and operates daily between the two cities as part of Conrail's dedicated intermodal service, utilizing C.W.S.'s STEELSAVER(R) Transport System. "Through this new service, steel producers and steel consumers will be offered an economical transport option that combines the reliability and consistency of intermodal rail shipping along with the flexibility and convenience of shipping by truck," said Dennis H. Paranzino, Conrail's assistant vice president-metals. "Bulk metals are the next intermodal transportation success story," added C.W.S. President George A. Klein. "After 19 years of designing intermodal equipment and service packages, we are most excited by the unique options now available to shippers through our partnership. This expands our network, and opens the door to new markets demanding quality and cost savings." SteeLINK service features STEELSAVER(R), a specialized container and service system engineered to carry all types of ferrous commodities on conventional intermodal rail cars. In most cases, the product is loaded onto STEELSAVER(R) equipment at the origin mill, and is drayed to either a Conrail intermodal terminal for shipment, or to a processing center where it is further prepared for rail transport. Upon arrival at the destination terminal the product, still on the STEELSAVER(R) equipment, is delivered by truck directly to the receiver. A toll-free single point of contact has been established so customers can order service or track their shipments without having to contact numerous sources. Conrail operates a rail-freight network in 14 Northeastern and Midwestern states, the District of Columbia, and the Province of Quebec. C.W.S. is a diversified North American cargo transportation concern headquartered in Oak Lawn, Ill. /delval/ -0- 1/13/93 /CONTACT: Richard W. Husband of Conrail, 215-209-4594, or George A.
