CONOCO INC. EXTENDS PROCESSING AGREEMENT WITH SPS PAYMENT SYSTEMS

RIVERWOODS, Ill., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- SPS Payment Systems, Inc. announced today that it has signed a five-year agreement to continue providing transaction processing services for Conoco Inc. SPS began working with Conoco in 1988, when Conoco launched a company-wide plan to convert Conoco's paper-based credit system to electronic technology.
Under the new agreement, SPS will provide Conoco's 5,200 retail outlets with a full range of transaction processing services including authorization and data capture for transactions made with Visa, MasterCard, Discover Card, American Express, and the Conoco cards.
"We are very pleased by Conoco's vote of confidence in SPS," said David D. Field, SPS vice president of network services. "Conoco is a progressive company with an outstanding team of professionals, and it has been exciting to participate in the company's aggressive growth."
According to Conoco, SPS was awarded the extended contract because of several factors which contributed to the success of Conoco's conversion to electronic transaction processing technology.
"We were impressed with the stability of service and high level of support that SPS has provided," said Paul Shively, manager, downstream accounting and credit card center. "SPS has demonstrated a high degree of technical expertise and flexibility in developing custom software applications specifically designed to meet Conoco's growth objectives. In addition, SPS has, by far, the most extensive 950 coverage in the country."
SPS will provide transaction processing and data capture services for a variety of credit authorization terminals used by Conoco. These include island-mounted card readers which allow Conoco customers to purchase gasoline at the pump; personal computers used as electronic cash registers and stand-alone authorization terminals which enable Conoco outlets nationwide to process transactions rapidly through 950 dial-up or leased line services; and terminals used in unattended fueling outlets in states where unattended fueling is allowed by law.
SPS has maintained a strong focus on the petroleum and convenience store industry, particularly since the industry relies so heavily on sophisticated systems to maintain and expand business. SPS anticipates continued growth in the number of transactions processed for Conoco, and it plans to work with the company in exploring new network technologies that will respond to changing industry needs in the future.
