CONNIE KALITTA NAMED MASTER ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR IN STATEWIDE COMPETITION

YPSILANTI, Mich., June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- When Conrad Kalitta stepped up to accept his award at the Michigan Entrepreneur of the Year(R) ceremonies Tuesday night, it was reminiscent of his days as a three-time world champion drag racer. This award, however, was for driving his company, American International Airways, Inc., to success in the highly competitive air-cargo and aviation industry.
Kalitta was named Michigan's "Master Entrepreneur of the Year" for his "demonstrated ability to maintain management excellence over a period of five years or more" at Tuesday night's awards banquet, sponsored nationally by Ernst & Young, Merrill Lynch and Inc. magazine. He will now be eligible for the national competition in Palm Springs, Calif., this November.
Kalitta, who established the world speed record for dragsters in 1989, built American International Airways, Inc. from a two-plane operation in 1971 to a $150 million company with over 1,000 employees. This year, the company took over the Zantop Willow Run freight hub, serving air-freight forwarders nationwide. Kalitta said he hopes to add international routes eventually, capitalizing on the U.S. Customs service recently opened at Willow Run Airport.
American International Airways, Inc. also offers air ambulance, business passenger charter and special hazardous material transport services. The company's fleet includes B-747s, DC-8s, B-727s, DC-9s, Lear jets and Beech 18 Turboprops.
The 1993 Entrepreneur of the Year(R) Awards were sponsored locally by Comerica Bank, Crain's Detroit Business, the law firm of Dickinson, Wright, Moon, Van Dusen & Freeman, Michigan Bell Small Business Markets, and WJR Radio.
