 CONNECTIX ANNOUNCES FIRST SOFTWARE SPECIFICALLY
 FOR MACINTOSH POWERBOOK
SAN MATEO, Calif., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Spearheading the effort to make the Macintosh(R) PowerBook(TM) more customizable and secure, Connectix Corp. announced CPU(TM) Connectix PowerBook utilities, the first utilities designed specifically for the needs of PowerBook users. Since its recent introduction, the PowerBook has become one of the fastest selling notebooks of all time with more than 250,000 units sold.
With a focus on extending battery life, CPU, which typically sells for $49, allows users to gain security, incorporate display enhancements and improve PowerBook responsiveness, all from a single control panel. Additionally, the control panel incorporates a choice of customizable settings for improved keyboard control and higher performance. Program Increases Usability
Designed to give PowerBook users more power, CPU has more than a dozen high performance utilities to increase usability of this popular notebook. Users can tap into any of CPU's programs by simply selecting an icon in the control panel display. In addition, users can create different power configurations for different environments (i.e., air travel usage when the PowerBook may run off the battery for an extended period of time, or home usage when the unit may be plugged in). CPU occupies approximately 200K of disk space, requiring only 20K of system memory for its core functions. Key features include:
Power Management: CPU's power management technology extends battery life by seamlessly controlling the PowerBook's power-hungry hard drive, processor and display. In addition, CPU's Power Manager(TM) automatically senses whether the PowerBook is plugged in or running on batteries, and adjusts its settings accordingly (i.e., the PowerBook won't go into sleep mode when plugged in).
Security: CPU brings security to the PowerBook by giving users a choice of Connectix' unique graphic-based or traditional password security to protect sensitive data whether the PowerBook is unattended, shut down or asleep.
Keyboard Control: CPU allows users to access menus and navigate dialogs using only the keyboard, a key for personal computer users who make the switch to a Macintosh. MenuPower(TM) and PowerDialogs(TM) provide the first comprehensive solution for keyboard control of Macintosh functions. All of CPU's options can be set from the keyboard. Users can create hot keys for many functions -- especially helpful for keyboard savvy PowerBook users.
CPU also provides several indicators of PowerBook activity, including hard disk spin up/spin down and battery status/charging indicators. Additionally, CPU's customizable menu bar display shows time until spin down or sleep, battery time remaining, processor speed, date and time. Items are displayed in a user-specified font or a graphic.
Other features include Instant-Wake(TM) which reduces wake-up time from several seconds to a fraction of a second, and the specially designed LCD Saver(TM) which prevents LCD burn-in and improves screen reliability. Availability
Connectix will ship CPU in July; it will be available through retail outlets, mail order and distributors.
