CONGRESSWOMAN SCHENK ANNOUNCES $12.1 MILLION CONTRACT FOR CUBIC; TOTAL COULD REACH $41 MILLION

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Congresswoman Lynn Schenk, D-San Diego, today announced the award of a $12.1 million military contract to Cubic Defense Systems Corp. which could be increased to $41 million if the Air Force exercises additional contract options.
Initially, Cubic is to develop seven ground data terminals for the Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (Joint Stars), which is one of the most sophisticated battlefield management systems ever developed. However, a total of 28 terminals may be built by Cubic, adding up to a total of $41 million if two contract options are exercised by the Air Force, said Dave Cours, president of Cubic Defense Systems Corp.
Congresswoman Schenk hailed the contract award as "good news" for San Diego's economy which has suffered from cutbacks in defense spending as a result of downsizing of the military.
Cubic is to begin work on the program later this year. The Joint STARS surveillance system was pressed into combat during Operation Desert Storm in December 1990 while it was still undergoing operations testing. The system, which received widespread acclaim for its performance, allowed the military to look behind enemy lines and to obtain intelligence and targeting data.
Under the contract awarded to Cubic today, the company will build the data link segment that communicates with the Ground Station Module which sends data to terminals and displays.
