CONGRESSMAN ROSTENKOWSKI CONTINUES VIGOROUS SUPPORT OF UNITED AIRLINES' BID FOR CHICAGO-LONDON ROUTE

CHICAGO, May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today announced that Congressman Dan Rostenkowski, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, continued his vigorous support for a new route to London from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport that can be started this summer.
In a letter to Transportation Secretary Pena Friday, Rostenkowski urged approval of the route transfer, saying failure to do so "might lose an essential opportunity to advance the competitive position of the U.S. air carrier industry in international markets."
Earlier this year, the U.S. government required USAir to dispose of its three London routes as a condition for approval of the USAir/British Airways arrangements. United Airlines, Northwest Airlines and the city of Nashville have reached agreement with USAir to transfer the routes respectively to Chicago, Detroit and Nashville, the latter route to be operated by American Airlines.
"It has always seemed likely that the British would accept the transfer of the U.S. gateways for these routes," Rostenkowski wrote. "Recent public statements from British Airways officials appear to signal a willingness, due to U.S. approval of increased access to the U.S. It is doubtful, however, that the British will simply volunteeer the needed flexibility. The U.S. must actively pursue it."
Rostenkowski also told Pena in his letter, "Not only would new services from Chicago, Detroit and Nashville to London this summer benefit the public in immeasurable ways, an agreement with the U.K. now would also have the additional value of demonstrating to countries such as Germany and France that Great Britain is in fact moving toward liberalization." He said protectionist-minded governments would place their carriers at a disadvantage as the aviation industry goes global.
