CON ARTIST SEEKING CREDIT CARD NUMBERS FROM MEREDITH CABLE CUSTOMERS

ROSEVILLE, Minn., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Meredith Cable today notified the Minnesota Attorney General's Office of a credit card scam involving an individual who is falsely identifying himself as a Meredith Cable employee and seeking payments from customers. Meredith Cable is issuing a warning to all customers to avoid giving credit card information to anyone before positively verifying that the caller is a Meredith Employee. Customers should require the caller to cite the proper customer identification number or call Meredith Cable directly to verify the person's employment.
"The individual has called one of our customers on as many as three occasions seeking so-called to purportedly repair a TV tower located in Shoreview," said Kathi Donnelly-Cohen, vice president of public affairs. "The scam artist tells our customers that a tower is crumbling or collapsing and that the city cannot afford to replace it. He says donations are needed to continue providing cable service to their area." In the cases that have been reported, the con artist tells customers that donations of $100 or more are accepted and only by credit card.
"The Attorney General's Office constantly warns consumers to never give credit card numbers over the telephone and we want to reinforce that message now to our customers who are the targets of this scam," Donnelly-Cohen said.
Meredith Cable first learned of the scam today and has since discovered that similar fraudulent calls have occurred since mid- September. Anyone who has been contacted by this individual is asked to immediately contact Meredith Cable 24 hours a day at 612-483-9999 or the Attorney General's Consumer Division between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at 612-296-3353.
