COMTREX SYSTEMS POSTS GAINS IN SALES, EARNINGS

MOORESTOWN, N.J., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ --Comtrex Systems Corp. (NASDAQ: COMX) today reported increases in sales and earnings for its third quarter ended Dec. 31, 1992.
Sales for the quarter were up 77 percent to $1,488,173, while net income was $62,548 or $.02 per share, compared to $21,830, or $.01 per share for the third quarter of 1991. For the nine months, sales are up 61 percent on a year-to-year basis, at $4,218,887, while net income stands at $213,275, or $.07 per share, compared with a loss of $95,564, or $.03 per share, for the prior year.
Financial statements of prior periods have been restated to reflect the divestiture of Russell Business Systems (RBS), a wholly owned subsidiary of the company.
The increase in sales for the quarter and year-to-date is primarily attributable to Comtrex' production of electronic point-of-sale information systems for exclusive distribution in the United States by Sharp Electronics Corporation, said Jeffrey C. Rice, Comtrex president and chief executive officer.
"After several years of losses, Comtrex has clearly turned the corner and is now poised for steady, profitable growth," said Rice. "Our designation of Sharp as exclusive U.S. distributor is now a year old and a proven success with significant incremental potential."
In addition to the established distribution agreement with Sharp, Comtrex point-of-sale systems have been approved for use in Dunkin' Donuts franchises. The company is also an authorized NCR "Independent Software Vendor," a designation that allows Comtrex products and services to be sold through all NCR's marketing channels part-and-parcel with NCR hardware systems.
"With RBS now behind us, and our relationships with Dunkin' Donuts and NCR supplementing the predictable, ongoing revenue streams from Sharp, we are expecting a good fiscal 1994," concluded Rice.
Comtrex Systems Corporation is a developer and manufacturer of point-of-sale electronic information systems, related peripherals and software, primarily for the restaurant industry.
