COMSAT FIRST TO PROVIDE INMARSAT SERVICE IN ALL FOUR OCEAN REGIONS
WASHINGTON, July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- COMSAT Mobile Communications today announced the start-up of its new Indian Ocean Region earth station in Anatolia, Turkey. With the addition of this facility, COMSAT becomes the only single communications provider to offer service in all four ocean regions: East Atlantic, West Atlantic, Pacific and Indian.
The Anatolia station is providing service in the Indian Ocean Region -- the fastest growing region for communications traffic in the Inmarsat system. The new facility joins COMSAT's Southbury, Conn., and Santa Paula, Calif., stations in providing high-quality satellite services to all Inmarsat-A equipped ships and land mobile terminals. With the Anatolia station on-line, COMSAT Mobile Communications is providing, for the first time in its 17-year history, global coverage in all ocean regions from its own facilities.
"Our new station in the IOR enables us to provide our customers with truly global service -- 'one-stop shopping' for all their communications needs, and they will now be able to add their IOR traffic to our various volume discount programs for significant savings," said Ronald J. Mario, president of COMSAT Mobile Communications. "Today, our customers can enjoy the same high- quality COMSAT services in the Indian Ocean Region that they've come to expect in the Atlantic and Pacific.
In a lease agreement with the Turkish PTT, COMSAT added earth station equipment to an existing facility at Anatolia, which allows COMSAT to route traffic to and from the IOR. IOR traffic is processed through the Anatolia station and then carried over dedicated fiber optic lines to COMSAT's Southbury earth station. The additional equipment allows the new IOR earth station to handle all the specialized telephone and data services in use by COMSAT's customers on land and at sea. All billing for the IOR services will be through COMSAT.
