COMSAT CORPORATION ESTABLISHES FOUR-YEAR SCHOLARSHIP IN MEMORY OF GEN. ROSCOE ROBINSON; SCHOLARSHIP TO BENEFIT WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES

BETHESDA, Md., Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- COMSAT Corporation (NYSE: CQ) and the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) announced the creation of the Gen. Roscoe Robinson scholarship, a four-year, $2,500-per-year award named after the first black American to achieve four-star rank in the U.S. Army. The first scholarship will be awarded for the 1994-95 school year.
COMSAT Corporation, where Robinson served as a member of the board of directors until his death earlier this year, is making the donation to support the scholarship in Robinson's memory.
The scholarship will pay $2,500 per year for four years to a high school senior selected each year by the DCPS Citywide Scholarship Selection Committee. It may be awarded on the basis of need, merit or both, and the student must be a graduate of Thomas Jefferson Junior High School. The scholarship is designated for Jefferson graduates because of COMSAT's multiyear, million-dollar alliance with the school.
"This continuation of COMSAT's commitment to education in our nation's capital is a fitting tribute to Roscoe, a man who served his country with such distinction," said Bruce L. Crockett, president and CEO. "Gen. Robinson visited Jefferson Junior High, was committed to COMSAT's role in education there and championed our alliance with the school. We want to celebrate his life and achievements; this seems to be a natural way to do that, given his interest in the education of this city's youth."
School Superintendent Franklin L. Smith stated that the District of Columbia Public Schools is gratified that COMSAT has established a perpetual scholarship in honor of Robinson. "Not only will the $10,000 award (over a four-year period) help defray the spiraling costs of post-secondary education, it will serve as well to immortalize the stellar character and achievements of the U.S. Army's first black four- star general who developed a personal relationship with Jefferson JHS students through the COMSAT Corporation."
