COMPUTER PRODUCTS PREDICTS HIGH GROWTH FROM EXPANSION
IN HIGH DENSITY POWER CONVERTER MARKET
BOCA RATON, Fla., Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Computer Products, Inc. (NASDAQ: CPRD) strengthened its position in the power conversion market today with its announcement of a new series of medium power high density converters. The company is targeting the new converters at the distributed and modular power markets in the global computer, telecommunications and instrumentation industries. Computer Products, Inc. is a multinational electronics firm that develops and manufactures power supplies and real-time measurement and control systems for business and industry. With the addition of the high density converters to its existing power supply offerings, Computer Products, Inc. offers a comprehensive range of power system solutions.
The high density converter's patented product technology and Computer Products' global manufacturing resources enable the company to address its customers' most important concerns: quality, time to market, effective and efficient use of their internal resources, size and cost-effective architecture, and providing technology consistent with leading-edge end products.
John N. Lemasters, Computer Products, Inc. chairman, president and chief executive officer, stated, "Computer Products brings to our customers 23 years of successful experience in understanding and helping to solve their business and application needs. Our 8,000 customers worldwide have the confidence of working with a multi- technology, multi-product line company with world class manufacturing facilities around the globe. With these new products we continue to offer the leading edge technology, financial strength, vision and global reach to provide solutions for all our customers' power requirements wherever they do business."
Patented Technology Delivers High Efficiency, Low Noise
Computer Products, Inc.'s high density converter offers a modular internal design, high efficiency and low internal noise. The company designed and developed the high density converter to address customer needs using patented technology developed internally. The converter has fixed frequency, Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS), which allows operation at high frequency while minimizing crossover losses. The 48 volt input, 5 volt output model in its basic configuration delivers an efficiency of 86 percent, the highest published for this class of product. The combination of fixed frequency operation, advanced packaging and a proprietary topology significantly reduces internal noise generation and allows input noise to be internally filtered to VDE 0871 level "A." The output choke is integrated with the main transformer, enhancing efficiency and reducing the peak-to-peak output ripple in the filtered version to less than 1 percent.
Customers Create Power Solution from "Menu" of Available,
 Pre-Engineered Features
The advanced design of Computer Products, Inc.'s proprietary technology gives customers the power to select the high density converter design features and capabilities they need from pre-engineered solutions. All selected options are then packaged into a single module. This "menu" approach lets companies create power modules to precisely fit their systems and design engineering needs. Because customers select only those features they need for a particular application, cost and performance compromises are minimized.
Computer Products, Inc.'s menu approach combines the cost and time savings of purchasing standard power modules with the flexibility of custom design. This method of selecting from available features applies "mass customization," a business concept which allows the customer to create a tailored solution from available options. (Mass customization was discussed in a 1990 report by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management.)
Computer Products, Inc.'s high density converter business is headed by vice president/general manager Dennis L. Akers, a 20-year veteran of the worldwide electronics market. The business is part of the company's Power Conversion Group with facilities in Fremont, Calif.; Boston; the Republic of Ireland; and Hong Kong.
Dennis L. Akers commented, "This is a customer-focused operation. Our commitment is to provide a new level of flexibility so that we deliver to each customer modular power solutions in a single, pre-engineered package that reflect their specific system and design needs. In addition, customers have the benefit of designing their own power supplies using pre-approved technology." Akers explained that these are first in a series of ongoing releases in high density medium power converters from Computer Products, Inc.
Barry Kelleher, corporate vice president and president of Computer Products, Inc.'s Power Conversion Group, said, "The high density converter series is an important addition to the company's industry leading power supply products offered by the four divisions of the Power Conversion Group, and another example of our ability to deliver powerful new technologies. It fits our strategy of focusing on customer needs by tailoring products to specific customer applications supported by advanced technology products, and Total Quality Management from ISO 9001 certified manufacturing facilities."
End use organizations and industry consultants consider the high density converter market to be the fastest growing segment of the power supply industry.
