COMPUTER NETWORK TECHNOLOGY ANNOUNCES UNLIMITED DISTANCE, FULL-FUNCTION SUPPORT FOR DASD

 COMPUTER NETWORK TECHNOLOGY ANNOUNCES
UNLIMITED DISTANCE, FULL-FUNCTION SUPPORT FOR DASD
MAPLE GROVE, Minn, April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Computer Network Technology Corporation (CNT) today announced the introduction of unlimited distance, full-function connectivity to IBM and compatible direct access storage devices (DASD) for its CHANNELink line of Extended Channel Networking products. The new DASD interface provides connectivity to commonly used mainframe DASD systems, disk arrays and solid-state disk systems. General availability of these products is planned to begin in the third quarter of 1992.
Mac Lewis, CNT's president and CEO, said, "CHANNELink's new DASD capabilities will allow our customers to implement high-volume, unlimited distance, transparent networks that connect remote disk facilities to IBM and compatible host computers. Because these capabilities address customer requirements for new applications, we expect these products to increase the overall market for our product line. We believe customers will use these capabilities for new CHANNELink applications such as duplicating critical data in two or more disk storage sites to protect themselves from disasters that could disrupt the operation of a primary data center." Lewis said that other applications for this technology include consolidating disk storage facilities to reduce costs and improving access to online data from multiple sites.
 CHANNELink's DASD Solution:
Gene Misukanis, CNT's vice president of engineering, said, "The DASD interface provides a comprehensive customer solution by being implemented within CHANNELink's unified architecture. For example, CHANNELink's technology approach enables customers to communicate with DASD over unlimited distances without restrictions on the type of disk datasets and with flexible features to support and manage network traffic -- all with no requirement for special host software or the overhead of extra host processing. In addition, CHANNELink customers will have the opportunity to support remote networked DASD devices on the same CHANNELink network as other Extended Channel Network applications such as mainframe channel-to-channel, channel-extended tape and print, and/or TCP/IP for hosts, supercomputers and workstations."
Support for Commonly Used DASD Devices:
The specific devices CNT plans to support with CHANNELink include nearly all commonly used DASD devices, including:
-- 3380/3390 disk systems from IBM or compatible vendors.
-- Disk-array products such as Iceberg from Storage Technology Corporation and Symmetrix from EMC Corporation.
-- Solid-state disk drives from EMC Corporation and Storage Technology Corporation.
 Pricing and Availability:
CHANNELink support for IBM 3880 type of disk drives with cached control units is expected to be available during the third quarter of 1992. Other models of disk controllers and drives including the IBM 3390/3990 and non-cached DASD controller configurations are expected to be available during the fourth quarter of 1992. Support for disk arrays and solid-state disks is also scheduled for availability during the third quarter of 1992. Representative prices for a CHANNELink system that includes the new remote DASD capability and applicable communication interfaces range from $81,000 to $150,000.
Computer Network Technology Corporation develops, manufactures and markets high-speed Extended Channel Networking products for the interconnection of mainframe computers, data base computers, supercomputers, peripheral devices and LANs over unlimited distances. The company's common stock is traded on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol CMNT.
