COMPUTER DATA SYSTEMS GETS GSA CONTRACT
 FOR INFORMATION SYSTEMS UPGRADE
WASHINGTON, June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Administrator Richard G. Austin of the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) today announced the award of a contract worth up to $102 million to Computer Data Systems, Inc. (CDSI), of Rockville, Md., to provide software modernization services for GSA's Public Buildings Service (PBS) information systems.
Austin said the nine-year, competitively awarded contract is a fixed-price agreement which will provide PBS users with an integrated, accessible information system to support their mission.
The contract will convert existing systems over the next two-and- a-half years to a modern processing environment, using up-to-date technology. CDSI will use a relational database management system to tie the data together and to provide easy access for PBS users.
The new system will offer a full range of mainstream tools, including report writers, on-line entry, edit and update, ad hoc inquiry and software to merge data from the PBS corporate systems into desktop tools, such as spreadsheets and word processors.
Austin said the contract will modernize the PBS systems using government and industry standards which will allow PBS systems to operate on many kinds of hardware, eliminating reliance on a single vendor's equipment.
The contract is a fixed-price agreement for the software modernization work and for training PBS users, with options for future systems maintenance and enhancements. The first year contract is worth $28 million.
Austin said the documentation and re-engineering work included in the contract will significantly reduce the cost to maintain PBS systems in the future and will enable PBS systems to change easily and flexibly as its business practices change.
