COMPUSERVE RELEASES USER INTERFACE FOR WINDOWS

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- CompuServe Incorporated today announced the preliminary release of the first official Windows interface to an online service. CompuServe Information Manager for Windows - WinCIM (sm) 1.0 is an interactive graphical interface for members of the CompuServe Information Service.
WinCIM provides a true Windows interface which simplifies and streamlines the way members access information on CompuServe. WinCIM also offers numerous opportunities for members to customize their access and to perform various functions offline, thus minimizing online connect charges.
"The growing popularity of Windows has produced a strong demand for a Windows CompuServe interface," said Barry F. Berkov, executive vice president of CompuServe's Information Services Division. "Member response to our interfaces for the Macintosh and for DOS has been extremely positive, and we expect that WinCIM will be met with the same or greater enthusiasm. While the functionality in WinCIM is based on that of the CompuServe Information Manager for DOS Version 2.0, WinCIM is a true Windows application and contains a number of unique features."
WinCIM uses a desktop metaphor to help members organize and store information both online and offline. Desktop features include an address book, in basket, out basket and filing cabinet.
 Other features of WinCIM:
-- A rich context-sensitive Help feature can be accessed from any area of WinCIM. Also, an electronic version of the CompuServe Directory, which provides a summary description of each of the more than 1,700 services on CompuServe, is available from the Help pulldown menu. Members can immediately connect to a service from its directory listing.
-- A button bar contains icons allowing access to such commonly used areas as Favorite Places, the GO command, Weather, Quotes, Filing
Cabinet, etc. In addition, WinCIM presents an appropriate "toolbox" -- a floating palette of icons -- in each of the major functional areas of the service, including forums, the Executive News Service, and the CB Simulator.
-- Members can create several CompuServe Mail messages offline and store them in the out basket. WinCIM can then be instructed to log on to CompuServe to quickly send the previously composed messages, retrieve any waiting mail to the in basket and, if desired, automatically disconnect, thereby saving online connect time.
-- While online in a forum, members can specify forum messages for retrieval to the filing cabinet to be read offline at the member's leisure, or select forum library files to be downloaded to the member's disk. As with mail, WinCIM can be set to automatically disconnect when the forum message retrieval and/or file download has been completed.
-- Two special features on the edit pulldown menu, "Copy To" and "Paste From," make it easy to compose mail and forum messages using text from online articles, messages already in the member's in basket or filing cabinet, or from text files on the member's disk.
-- WinCIM has a built-in decoder for the Graphics Interchange Format (GIF), the CompuServe-developed standard for platform-independent exchange of online information service graphics images. Members can view GIF images online or offline, and copy images to the Windows clipboard for importation to a graphics program.
CompuServe members can now order the preliminary version of WinCIM on either 5 1/4" or 3 1/2" disks at a cost of $25, with a $25 online usage credit. Although no manual is available with the preliminary version, members using the current version of DOS CIM who are familiar with Windows programs should have no difficulty using WinCIM. The disks can be ordered online (GO WINCIM). Members who obtain the preliminary version will be able to download subsequent interim updates online and will receive a production Version 1.0 release kit with a Quick Start Guide in early February at no additional charge. This distribution option is in addition to previously announced distribution programs.
Also in February, CompuServe members who have not ordered the preliminary version will be able to download or order the 1.0 production version. WinCIM for new members will be available in a new CompuServe Membership Kit containing the Quick Start Guide in March and a larger user's guide will also be available for ordering at that time.
