COMPUSERVE INCORPORATED AND METATEC CORPORATION ANNOUNCE STRATEGIC ALLIANCE

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- CompuServe Incorporated and Metatec Corporation (NASDAQ: META) announced today a strategic alliance that positions the CompuServe Information Service as a major provider of multimedia information services and Metatec as a leading supplier of CD ROM-based publishing services.
Beginning in the first quarter 1994, CompuServe will publish a multimedia extension of its information service. With the aid of Metatec's multimedia technology, CompuServe Information Service members with CD ROM-equipped computers will have the advantage of constantly updated online information enhanced by dynamic audio and video components. Potential content includes a graphics and sound-enhanced version of CompuServe's electronic shopping service, an interactive magazine and multimedia extensions to some of CompuServe's most popular databases and special interest forums. CompuServe is recognized as the largest worldwide provider of information services to personal computer users.
"This alliance with Metatec allows us to help define the consumer information services of the future. We can use our extensive network and database capability with the multimedia capabilities of CD ROM to deliver a broad array of new services to CompuServe Information Service members," said Maurice A. Cox, president and chief executive officer of CompuServe.
Both CompuServe and Metatec see the multimedia project as an opportunity to combine online services with CD ROM-based information and to have an interplay that makes the best use of each medium's strong points. "With faster transmission speeds and wider bandwidth, we will add substantial value and quality to the information our members receive. This is the first important step in making CompuServe available through multiple media channels," said Cox.
"We are very pleased to be working with CompuServe in this strategic alliance," said Jeffrey M. Wilkins, chairman of Metatec. "We are currently working with many publishers who are moving their products to CD ROM, but want to establish ourselves as a partner to major publishers by providing short turnaround times and frequent publication schedules. We believe this relationship with CompuServe will clearly do that."
Metatec is the publisher of Nautilus(sm), the multimedia magazine published monthly on CD ROM. Available for both the Macintosh and MPC/Windows platforms, Nautilus features software, educational programs, technical tips and tools, multimedia presentations, industry news and desktop publishing resources.
In addition to publishing Nautilus, Metatec Corporation (NASDAQ: META) is a leading supplier of CD ROM manufacturing services and application development services to corporations. The company is also the principal provider of compact disc manufacturing and distribution services to the radio syndication market.
The CompuServe Information Service provides its worldwide membership of more than 1.4 million with 1,700 databases and services to meet business and personal interests. CompuServe can be accessed by any modem-equipped personal computer using the CompuServe Information Manager graphical interface or any general communications software.
In addition to the CompuServe Information Service, CompuServe Incorporated provides frame relay, wide and local area networking services, business and information services and software to major corporations and government agencies worldwide.
CompuServe is an H&R Block (NYSE: HRB) company.
