COMPUSERVE FIRST TO SELL LICENSED FONTS ONLINE

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- CompuServe Information Service members can now view online, purchase and download commercial quality, fully licensed type fonts. CompuServe is the first online information service to sell licensed fonts and to allow online viewing.
Through a new service called DTP OnLine (GO DTPONLINE), members have access to the entire ITC Font Library, which contains more than 520 of the world's most popular fonts. The ITC library is provided to CompuServe by FontHaus Inc. of Fairfield, Conn.
The font collection is organized by category (serif, sans-serif, decorative, etc.) and searchable by keyword. Members using the CompuServe Information Manager (CIM) graphical interface can view any individual font or font family online as a GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) image; others can download the GIF file for later viewing. Once selected for purchase, fonts can be immediately retrieved and used. The purchase price ($29 per font) is added to the member's CompuServe bill.
"We're targeting the desktop publishing professional with this service, but it can benefit anyone who needs convenient, 24-hour access to top quality fonts at competitive prices," said Jim Hogan, director of product marketing for CompuServe. "We've created a new delivery channel that can eventually be used to sell a broad range of software products." CompuServe plans to offer other licensed desktop publishing products, such as clip art, photos and cartoons, through DTP OnLine in early 1994, Hogan said.
"We believe that this form of electronic distribution is the future," said FontHaus president Mark Solsburg. "In our business, when our customers need a font, they can't get it fast enough. Now our customers are no longer dependent on our business hours and conventional delivery systems."
Initially, DTP OnLine is offering Macintosh PostScript fonts. In early 1994, other fonts will be made available in the Windows TrueType, Windows PostScript and Macintosh TrueType platforms. More licensed fonts from FontHaus and other vendors will be added on an ongoing basis.
CompuServe Members pay $8.95 per month for unlimited access to more than 50 basic services. When accessing CompuServe's other areas, such as DTP OnLine, members pay $8 or $16 per hour, depending on the speed of the modem used.
Established in 1979, the CompuServe Information Service provides nearly 2,000 databases and services to meet both business and personal interests. CompuServe can be accessed by any modem-equipped personal computer using CIM or any general communications software. For more information please call 800-848-8199.
In addition to the CompuServe Information Service, CompuServe Incorporated provides frame relay, wide and local area networking services, electronic mail, business information services and software to major corporations and government agencies worldwide.
CompuServe is an H&R Block (NYSE: HRB) company.
