 TO SUPPORT NEW SONY MULTIMEDIA CD-ROM PLAYER
 NEW YORK CITY, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Compton's NewMedia Inc. and Sony Corp. of America (NYSE: SNE) today announced a development/marketing relationship to further the growth of the Sony Multimedia CD-ROM Player, according to Compton's NewMedia. Under the relationship, Compton's NewMedia is a preferred company in the acquisition of titles from the third-party publishers and the publication of multimedia CDs for the Multimedia Player. Compton's NewMedia will also convert its existing titles to the new Sony platform as well.
 Compton's NewMedia plans to offer more than 50 multimedia CD-ROM player software titles into retail channels by the first quarter of 1993. Targeted distribution points include computer and software stores, consumer electronic stores, video dealers, office products suppliers and bookstores. In keeping with the special needs of these market segments, Compton's NewMedia has developed and established CD-ROM packaging and merchandise displays suitable for mass merchandising outlets.

 Compton's NewMedia will release over 50 titles for the Multimedia Player under license from 14 publishers including Merriam-Webster, Oxford University Press, World Library Inc., Viking Press, Rodale Inc., Simon and Schuster, Prentice Hall, Dartnell, American Management Association, National Textbook Co., St. Martin's Press, Nightengale Conant, Bantam and Compton's Learning Co.
 Combined Strength in Distribution
 Compton's NewMedia will be the leading marketing, sales and distribution company for these compatible titles. The software titles will be packaged in Compton's NewMedia's standardized CD-ROM package design. This new package created by Compton's has been adopted by over 20 leading CD-ROM publishers. These titles will be available to consumers in the same retail locations as Sony's hardware. It will be merchandised in Compton's newly created point-of-purchase displays which will show the wide availability of titles supported by a merchandising program. Titles will also be available through direct mail.
 Setting Information Delivery Standards
 In addition, Compton's NewMedia's SmarTrieve search and retrieval software is a preferred search and retrieval engine for the development of titles for the Multimedia Player. SmarTrieve was used in over 50 titles developed for the Multimedia Player. SmarTrieve is used by CD-ROM developers and R.R. Donnelly's Database Technology Services (DTS) division in preparing text, pictures and sound for electronic publishing. R.R. Donnelly's book group is the leading provider of book manufacturing services to book publishers worldwide. Their leading DTS division is the leading provider of production services to the electronic publishing industry, preparing the contents of interactive books and reference sources for publishers entering the electronic publishing arena.
 SmarTrieve's unique system lets users ask questions in everyday language such as "Why is the sky blue?" It does not require knowledge of complicated search language. In addition, it handles all multimedia features including pictures, audio and animation.
 The Sony Multimedia CD-ROM Player integrates a standard CD-ROM XA drive, PC-compatible microprocessor, LCD display panel, speaker, keyboard and cursor pad in a small, lightweight package. The industry's first portable self-contained multimedia product, the Multimedia Player, is ideal for personal and business productivity, information, education and entertainment. Video output can also be displayed on a television monitor in color.
