COMPTON'S MULTIMEDIA ENCYCLOPEDIA TO SHIP WITH EACH APPLE PERFORMA 600; COMPTON'S AFFILIATE PROGRAM ADDS TO CONTINUED GROWTH OF APPLE TITLES
NEW YORK, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Compton's NewMedia, a major publisher and distributor of information and entertainment software on CD-ROM has announced Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) will bundle the award-winning Compton's MultiMedia Encyclopedia(R) on each Apple Performa 600 CD-ROM system. Compton's NewMedia is supporting Apple's entry into the consumer market with a cooperative sales and marketing program. Concurrent with Apple Consumer Division's entry into the consumer CD-ROM market, Compton's will distribute 20 Macintosh-compatible CD-ROM based titles with another 25 titles that will ship by Second Quarter 1993 to retail locations across the United States to support the new platform. Compton's NewMedia will also launch an aggressive in-store software merchandising program to help popularize the Performa 600 computer.
The 45 CD-ROM titles, published by both Compton's and its affiliates, cover a broad range of categories from children's edutainment to classic stories to games to clip art. Headlining the titles is the announcement of Apple's choice to bundle the newly released Macintosh version of Compton's MultiMedia Encyclopedia with each Apple Performa 600 computer. The Macintosh version features text from the 26-volume set plus pictures, sound and QuickTime(TM) animation.
"We share Apple's vision of the future of CD-ROM in the consumer market," said Dr. Stanley Frank, president of Compton's NewMedia. "We are extremely pleased to be working with Apple to provide consumers with an extensive range of educational and entertainment software in the new Performa 600 format." In-Store Merchandising Headlines New Format, Titles
In anticipation of swift market penetration, Compton's NewMedia has created custom Apple CD-ROM in-store Point-of-Purchase displays, catalogs and marketing materials available for resellers to merchandise up to 24 boxes (12 titles, 2-deep each). "With these displays, retailers may immediately show consumers the wide range of CD-ROM titles available for the Performa 600. And with the size and portability of these displays, retailers can show the titles next to the hardware," said Norman Bastin, senior vice president and general manager of Compton's NewMedia.
The Point-of-Purchase display is part of Compton's campaign to promote the wide range and availability of CD-ROM titles to the consumer and to establish industry-standard size packaging. The standard has been accepted and implemented by other CD-ROM publishers including Sony Corp. of America. Expanding Mac Development and Affiliates Program
In anticipation of growing demand for Mac titles, Compton's NewMedia has launched a comprehensive affiliates program designed to recruit companies that produce high quality Apple software. In addition to marketing assistance from Compton's NewMedia, affiliate publishers also have access to Compton's NewMedia's extensive distribution network with over 3,500 retail outlets worldwide for CD-ROM products, with more being added through its aggressive sales and marketing efforts.
Compton's NewMedia is the leading provider of information, education and entertainment software in the emerging CD-ROM industry. Compton's has launched an aggressive sales and marketing program for the mass consumer market, publishing compelling titles and lending its marketing support to affiliated publishers. Compton's is also responding to environmental concerns by offering reduced-sized packaging with complementary point-of-purchase displays, and also encourages other manufacturers to join them in standardizing to the same compact box made of recyclable materials and printed with non-polluting inks.
Compton's NewMedia is located at 2320 Camino Vida Roble, Carlsbad, Calif., 92009.
