 COMPTON'S ENCYCLOPEDIA ENTERS BOOKSTORE MARKET
 CHICAGO, March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Compton's Encyclopedia has given

the retail bookstores entree into the billion-dollar multivolume encyclopedia market -- an unprecedented marketing move in an encyclopedia industry that has largely depended on in-the-home sales.
As shipments to the first wave of bookstores across the U.S. were completed, Richard C. Shapiro, vice president of sales and marketing, said:
"Today's busier, more sophisticated consumer needs to have easier, more convenient access to products such as ours. The nation can never hope to compete in the international education arena until the home more actively supports the educational process. We feel that being able to buy a major approved, multi-volume encyclopedia locally is an important element in fulfilling the home information center needs of families."
Shapiro said Compton's will be inviting an additional 5,000 bookstore owners to participate in the program, which he described as a "mark of service wisdom" on the part of the retailer because of "the convenience it affords today's consumer."
Shapiro said Compton's has received many phone inquiries, including one from a store owner who expressed thanks for "helping him better serve his customers." Shapiro said that the U.S. Military Academy Bookstore, Wake Forest College Bookstore and the famous Tattered Cover are among those who responded to this customer service need.
First published in 1922, Compton's is a state-of-the-art reference for the entire family, from elementary school students through busy parent. The 26-volume set has undergone a major revision, featuring a new look inside and out while retaining the outstanding graphics, smooth writing style, and motivational presentation for which it is acclaimed. Compton's Encyclopedia also is the parent of the multi-award-winning Compton's MultiMedia Encyclopedia, the world's first true multimedia reference work.
Compton's retains all the hallmark features that make answers easy to access. The famous volume 26 Fact-Index has been expanded to nearly 30,000 capsule facts entries, making it a simple matter to access answers to casual questions or assignments. It also is the gateway to the in-depth materials available within the 26-volume set for research projects or reports.
"Other dynamic marketing techniques aimed at bringing the Compton's answer to the consumer will be announced soon," Shapiro said. "In today's 'data-intensive age' no one -- including families -- can afford to be without a viable 'Home Information Center.' Compton's Encyclopedia is the centerpiece and most vital element in this setting."
