 COMPTEK RESEARCH REPORTS IMPROVED
FISCAL 1992 THIRD QUARTER AND NINE-MONTH RESULTS
BUFFALO, N.Y., Jan. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Comptek Research, Inc. (AMEX/BSE: CTK) today announced financial results for the third quarter and first nine months of fiscal 1992. Sales and earnings for the period ending Dec. 27, 1991, were the highest ever achieved for a third quarter or nine-month period. The most recent three-month period was the twelfth consecutive quarter of higher year-to-year earnings per share.
Revenues for the fiscal third quarter were $15,088,000, up 24 percent from $12,136,000 in the same period last year. Net income in the fiscal 1992 third quarter, which was restricted by start-up expenses for Comptek Telecommunications, Inc. and Bison Data Corporation, was $390,000, or $0.19 per share. In the same quarter a year ago, net income was $367,000, or $0.18 per share, in the fiscal 1991 third quarter.
Comptek has developed an advanced radio data transmission system for use with bank automated teller machines (ATMs). The system, which is known as DataMover(R) 2000, was developed by Comptek Telecommunications, a wholly owned subsidiary of Comptek Research, and is being marketed by Bison Data Corporation, a joint venture that was formed in 1991.
The Dec. 27, 1991 backlog was $47.5 million, which is 14.5 percent higher than the $41.5 million backlog at the end of last year's third quarter and slightly less than the $48.4 million at the end of the fiscal 1992 second quarter. During the quarter, Comptek recorded approximately $16 million in contract bookings.
"We are pleased with our continuing record of growth and the progress we have made in the development of our data transmission system," commented Dr. John R. Cummings, Comptek's chairman, president and chief executive officer. "Even though the start-up expenses of our telecommunications group may continue to restrict profit margins in the fiscal fourth quarter, management is confident that Comptek will achieve its third consecutive year of higher earnings and our twenty-first consecutive year of improved sales.
"The business activity at Comptek Telecommunications is extremely high," continued Cummings. "We expect to announce contracts for orders for the DataMover(R) 2000 shortly."
Nine-month revenues were $46,945,000, up 27 percent from $36,834,000 the corresponding period a year ago. Net income in the nine-month period was $1,161,000, or $0.57 per share, compared with last year's net earnings of $1,073,000, or $0.52 per share.
Comptek Research, Inc., with 13 offices and subsidiary locations in the United States, develops command, control, communications and intelligence systems and electronic warfare systems, primarily for the Department of Defense. Comptek also provides telecommunications transmission systems and services. Related activities include providing specialized technical services and manufacturing precision electronics for commercial applications.
