HOUSTON, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Fueling the tremendous momentum generated from its high-quality, low-priced product strategy, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) today introduced a high performance color notebook personal computer for under $2,800, and two new aggressively priced 486-based COMPAQ ProLinea desktop PCs starting at $1,349 (U.S. suggested list prices).
Compaq also announced it has made several enhancements to the entire COMPAQ ProLinea family. With these new products, Compaq continues to set the standard for customers who look for brand name products offering the highest quality and comprehensive service and support at very competitive prices.
"In June, Compaq rocked the industry by combining unmatched Compaq quality with extremely aggressive pricing, to create a new standard in affordable PCs," said Eckhard Pfeiffer, President and Chief Executive Officer, Compaq Computer Corporation. "Since then, every indicator tells us that our strategy is working."

Pfeiffer added, "Our second quarter financial results were strengthened by new product shipments. Demand and shipments for all COMPAQ products remains at an all time high. Preliminary market share data shows unit market share gains, which we expect to continue as a result of our new product success. And while most of our competitors have reacted to our June 15 announcement, many have only lowered prices on older products, or announced products with significantly fewer features and less functionality. More importantly, we are backing all of our products with one of the most comprehensive support programs available and we are not cutting back on this fundamental service, as are some of our competitors." COMPAQ Contura 3/25c: Fastest Windows Machine In Its Class(b)
The COMPAQ Contura 3/25c sports the popular design and features of the COMPAQ Contura family unveiled on June 15. It features a bright, nine-inch passive-matrix color VGA display. Powered by the Intel 25-MHz 386SL microprocessor, the new PC offers advanced performance to mobile business professionals who require a cost-effective color notebook that is fast, and built to last.
Engineered with a Compaq-designed graphics chip and software drivers, the COMPAQ Contura 3/25c delivers higher performance than any notebook in its class when operating in Microsoft Windows 3.1 environments(b). For example, the COMPAQ Contura 3/25c offers up to 40 percent greater performance in Windows environments(b) than the DELL 325NC, and with an SLP less than the direct selling price of the DELL machine. In addition, the COMPAQ Contura 3/25c outperforms the AST PREMIUM EXEC 386SX/25c in Windows environments(b) by 68 percent, and is priced about $300 below the list price of a comparable AST model.
