COMPAQ TO WORK WITH EPA TO PROMOTE ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN COMPUTERS
BOSTON, May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Reaffirming its ongoing commitment to protecting the environment, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) today announced it is working with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to outline and implement energy efficiency guidelines that will be used as part of the new voluntary EPA Energy Star Computers program. The program is being announced today at the EPA's NorthEast Region Green Initiative (ENERGI) Conference in Boston.
The Energy Star Computers program is aimed at encouraging computer makers to design their computers to use less energy. Companies participating in the program will commit to achieve efficiency gains in new products, support programs to reduce energy consumption in existing products, and display an Energy Star Computers logo on products and advertisements, indicating products that have been manufactured for maximum energy efficiency.
Compaq will assist the EPA in developing guidelines for computer manufacturers aimed at reducing pollution by improving the energy efficiency of a broad range of office equipment products.
"At Compaq, we share our customers' concern for the environment, and our involvement in the Energy Star Computers program is evidence of the company's effort to help preserve and protect our natural resources," said Eckhard Pfeiffer, president and chief executive officer of Compaq Computer Corporation. "Through programs like these, and in the products we produce, Compaq and other computer manufacturers are making an impact on the industry's ongoing efforts to protect our environment."
Compaq also participates in the EPA's Green Lights program, which is designed to encourage companies to utilize energy saving, cost-effective lighting in their corporate offices.
Earlier this year, Compaq announced the industry's first battery disposal program, which provides customers with an efficient and ecologically sound method to safely recycle their rechargeable batteries used in COMPAQ laptop and notebook PCs.
In January, Compaq announced new notebook personal computers -- the COMPAQ LTE Lite/20 and COMPAQ LTE Lite/25 -- which include innovative power management and conservation features. The COMPAQ LTE Lite's "Hibernation" mode automatically turns the unit off when it is not being used, saving the user's data, while the product's "smart" battery pack includes a built-in microprocessor that continuously monitors power use.
Compaq Computer Corporation is a world leader in the manufacture of PC systems, and desktop, portable, laptop and notebook personal computers. COMPAQ products are sold and serviced in more than 69 countries through a variety of dealers, systems integrators, VARs and distributors.
Founded in February 1982, Compaq ranks 377 in the "Global Fortune 500," Fortune Magazine's listing of the world's largest companies. In the 1991 U.S. Fortune 500, Compaq ranks No. 136.
