COMPAQ TEAMS WITH MOTOROLA, NOKIA TO BOLSTER CELLULAR MODEMS
 ENRICHES MOBILE COMPUTING TECHNOLOGY, PRODUCTIVITY
HOUSTON, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Extending its leadership in mobile computing technology, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ), in tandem with two of the world's leading cellular telephone companies, today announced the introduction of the most full-featured, high performance internal modem available from any PC manufacturer.
Compaq initiated relationships to develop new cellular modem technologies with Motorola (NYSE: MOT) and Nokia Mobile Phones, Inc. Compaq engineers have worked directly with both companies to bring new products to market that enhance and extend the capabilities for customers who require high levels of communication in COMPAQ notebook and portable products.
"Wireless communications will revolutionize the way portables are used. Customers told us they wanted integrated, highly mobile cellular data and fax connections, and COMPAQ SpeedPAQ 144 offers the ultimate productivity tool for mobile computing," said Compaq President and CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer. "The Compaq engineering team, in concert with both Motorola and Nokia, has advanced the state of cellular communications by marrying cellular connections with portable PC technology. We've provided yet another reason for customers to look to Compaq for technology leadership."
The COMPAQ SpeedPAQ 144 offers a lightning speed of 14.4 Kbps for landline data transmission and 9600 bps for send/receive fax transmissions.
In an industry first, Compaq customers using the COMPAQ SpeedPAQ 144 can take advantage of the Cellular Direct Connection feature, a simple cable interface between the computer and cellular phone which eliminates the need for an inconvenient, cumbersome cellular interface box required by other manufacturers. With this easy-to-use, lightweight cable, cellular customers can easily connect their computers to send data and faxes from virtually anywhere.
The COMPAQ SpeedPAQ 144 also features the industry's first high- speed internal modem to ship with the MNP 10 error-control protocol to enhance data transmission quality.
Compaq customers can use the Cellular Direct Connection feature with the Motorola MicroTAC, MicroTAC Lite and MicroTAC Ultra Lite families of telephones and the NOKIA 121. U.S. suggested list price for the COMPAQ SpeedPAQ 144 is $649.
"Combining cellular technology with COMPAQ portable computers provides our customers with a strong link to a leader in PC technology, and we look forward to offering additional data communication solutions to end users," said Robert N. Weisshappel, senior vice president and general manager of Motorola's Cellular Subscriber Group.
Nokia Mobile Phones, Inc. President Paul Chellgren said, "Nokia customers will find the new NOKIA 121 microportable an excellent match with COMPAQ portable computers. Working together with Compaq, our teams will provide the finest in mobile data technology available anywhere."
The COMPAQ SpeedPAQ 144 is one of several modem options available for the Enhanced Option Slot found on COMPAQ notebook and portable products. The COMPAQ SpeedPAQ 144 is available for the COMPAQ LTE Lite Family, COMPAQ Contura Family, COMPAQ PORTABLE 486 Family and COMPAQ LTE 386s/20.
Compaq will begin shipping the COMPAQ SpeedPAQ 144 in late November.
