COMPAQ TAKES LEAD WITH EPA TO PROMOTE ENERGY-EFFICIENT COMPUTERS;
 EXTENDS COMMITMENT TO ENERGY EFFICIENCY
 SAN JOSE, Calif., June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Reinforcing its commitment to produce energy-efficient personal computers, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) today announced it is among the first companies to sign a partnership agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the agency's Energy Star Computers Program.
 Compaq has been working with the EPA to outline and implement energy efficiency guidelines that will be used as part of this voluntary program, which will be announced at a press conference in San Jose today.
 As a participant in the program, Compaq commits to continue its efforts to achieve efficiency gains in new products and to support programs to reduce energy consumption in existing products. Energy-efficient Compaq PCs will display a special EPA-authorized Energy Star Computers logo.
 Compaq will also work with customers to offer helpful tips and information about energy savings and will cooperate with the EPA to identify users who have profited from the Energy Star Computers program.
 "Businesses today must be active partners with their customers, the government and industry groups in an effort to protect our environment. At Compaq, we are taking a leadership role in accomplishing this," said Doug Johns, senior vice president and general manager, PC Division, Compaq Computer Corporation. "Through the Energy Star Computers program and efforts like it, Compaq will continue to look for new and innovative ways to preserve our natural resources."
 Compaq's participation in the EPA's Energy Star Computers program extends the company's record of pro-active environmental efforts. Compaq is a partner in EPA's Green Lights program, which is designed to encourage the use of energy-saving lighting in buildings and factories, and last January the company announced the industry's first battery disposal program, which provides customers with an efficient and ecologically sound method to safely recycle rechargeable batteries used in COMPAQ notebook PCs.
 Earlier this year, Compaq announced new notebook personal computers which include innovative power management and conservation capabilities. The COMPAQ LTE Lite/20, COMPAQ LTE Lite/25 and COMPAQ LTE Lite/25c feature a special "Hibernation" mode which automatically turns a unit off when it is not being used, while still saving the user's data. In addition, the computers' "smart" battery pack includes a built-in microprocessor that continuously monitors power use.
 Compaq Computer Corporation is a world leader in the manufacture of PC servers, and desktop, portable, laptop and notebook personal computers. Founded in 1982, the company reported worldwide revenues for 1991 of $3.3 billion.
 COMPAQ products are sold and supported in more than 69 countries through a network of more than 5,000 Compaq Marketing Partners, including authorized resellers (national chains, franchisors and superstores), specialized dealers, value-added resellers (VARs), distributors, network integrators, system integrators and authorized third-party maintainers.
