COMPAQ OFFERS WORLD'S HIGHEST PERFORMANCE PCS AND MAINTAINS
AGGRESSIVE PRICING; DELIVERS ADVANCED 66-MHZ DX2 PERFORMANCE
HOUSTON, Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Holding fast to its commitment to deliver the best PC values in the marketplace, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) today launched several extraordinary desktop models based on the high-performance 66-MHz Intel 486DX2 microprocessor. Shipping today, these advanced, highest quality personal computers are the latest additions to the full-featured top-of-the-line COMPAQ DESKPRO/M and the popular mid-range COMPAQ DESKPRO/i families.
"Compaq is the true PC industry leader, and we are committed to maintaining that position by delivering clearly differentiated products with advanced technologies at extremely competitive prices -- even at the very high end of our product lines. In fact, the new COMPAQ DESKPRO 66M is the highest-performance desktop PC available in the world today," said Compaq's President and CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer. "All our models now offer Compaq's traditional quality, compatibility and reliability in addition to true worldwide support and aggressive pricing," Pfeiffer concluded. COMPAQ DESKPRO 66M
The COMPAQ DESKPRO 66M -- the new leader for graphics performance -- incorporates the new 66-MHz 486DX2 microprocessor and delivers performance up to 35 percent faster than 50-Mhz 486DX2 models. Prices start at $4,399(a) for a model with a 210MB hard drive. That is about what you might pay for a competitive PC, but for the same money the new COMPAQ DESKPRO 66M features: a generous 8MB of RAM and 256-kilobyte secondary cache for efficient application processing; the accelerated QVision graphics controller for blazing Windows performance; integrated Business Audio for practical applications of sound and voice; a 32-bit EISA bus for efficient I/O; Intelligent Modularity for ease of service and long-term upgradability; pre-installed DOS and Windows 3.1; and a COMPAQ mouse. The COMPAQ DESKPRO 66M is ideal for high-powered mechanical PC users -- those who need advanced graphics and processing power for CAD, software development, scientific analysis, imaging and computer-generated graphics. It is also attractive to those who simply want the best PC in the world.
Like all DESKPRO/M family PCs, the COMPAQ DESKPRO 66M will be upgradable to even more advanced processor technologies from Intel as they become available. COMPAQ DESKPRO 4/66i
Advanced PC users looking for real value in "the ultimate Windows PC" will find the new COMPAQ DESKPRO 4/66i extremely attractive. Starting at only $2,749 for the model with a 120MB hard drive, the newest most powerful member of the COMPAQ DESKPRO/i family is the ideal choice for Windows users, offering outstanding performance at a dramatically low price. All models integrate the accelerated QVision graphics controller, the flexible VersaChip upgrade architecture and the new Business Audio capabilities. Hard drive models have pre-installed DOS. Windows models are available with pre-installed Windows 3.1 and a COMPAQ mouse. Upgrade Paths
A 486DX2/66 Processor Board Upgrade Kit is available for all current COMPAQ DESKPRO/M users. Upgrade cost ranges from $729 to $2,179, depending on the processor board being replaced. COMPAQ DESKPRO 486/33M users may also upgrade by simply installing a 486DX2/66 upgrade chip on the processor board -- essentially the same method for upgrading all COMPAQ DESKPRO/i family PCs.
A range of 486-based upgrade chips are available from Compaq for the COMPAQ DESKPRO/i family, from 486sx/25 to 486DX2/66. An optional 64-kilobyte secondary cache is also available for added COMPAQ DESKPRO/i performance. Company Background

The 486DX2 processors are fully compatible with existing 386 and 486 technologies. While the 486DX2 processor interacts with the rest of the computer at "normal" speeds, it processes information internally at twice the "normal" speed. For example, the 486DX2/66 processes information at 66 MHz, but communicates with all other PC components at 33MHz. The 486DX2/66 technology allows very high performance, but without the added cost of developing a system board based on 66 MHz components. New DESKPRO/M MODELS Feature:
